Historical Committee In looking back at TASFAA’s history, the year 1972-73 is highlighted.
During Cannon Mayes’ term as TASFAA President, a six-district system was established within the state to facilitate periodic informal meetings for fellowship, professional updating, and to discuss regularly the issues and developments in financial aid. The six districts included all 95 counties in Tennessee. The meetings were arranged by the District Meeting Committee. The Committee had six members – one from each District. The TASFAA Hotline Network (Message Network) was established. The hotline was important in distributing news and information across the state. A chart was distributed to TASFAA members indicating the flow of the hotline. No person had to make more than three telephone calls. The July 1973 Crossfeed stated “A state-wide use of our TASFAA hot-line notified each institution in the state of the need to deobligate any unused CWSP funds or to apply for CWSP funds, if needed. The service was of great value for those institutions which could use extra work-study funding to complete the fiscal year.” Laurel Wells of Southern Missionary College - Crossfeed Editor John G. Bannister, Acting Director of the Tennessee Student Assistance Agency, announced that approximately 2,000 students benefited from the Tennessee Tuition Grant Program during its first year of operation. (The Tennessee Tuition Grant became the Tennessee Student Assistance Award.) He indicated that all of the appropriated $1.2 million was awarded, with the average grant approximating $600. Mrs. Eunice Edwards, Director of Financial Aid at Fisk University and President of NASFAA, was announced as one of five Women of the Year for 1972 by the Davidson County Business and Professional Women’s Club. Mrs. Edwards was the first woman and the first African American to serve as NASFAA President. TASFAA’s Annual Meeting was held at Henry Horton State Park on April 29-May 1. The meeting’s theme was “Meeting the Challenge of Change.” SASFAA’s Annual Meeting was held at the Robert Meyer Hotel in Jacksonville, Florida.
