Historical Committee This year marks the 40th anniversary of our association. Early documents show the organizational meeting of the Tennessee Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators was held on Friday, April 21, 1967 in the Cordell Hull Building in Nashville, Tennessee. Fifty-two delegates from forty-one state and private colleges and universities and governmental units in Tennessee were in attendance. The meeting was called to order by John G. Bannister, State Membership Chairman of the Southern Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Commissioner of Education J. H. Warf provided a welcome address. Mrs. Marian Watkins from the U. S. Office of Education discussed “Proposed Amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965” with the group. There was discussion of recent changes and the present status of the guaranteed loan program. The group was led in an open discussion and a question/answer session of “Federal Aid Programs” by Charles H. Hamblen, Jr., Field Representative, U. S. Office of Education, and financial aid staff from several schools. The final period of the afternoon was devoted to a business session and the election of officers for TASFAA. The officers elected were Belt Keathley, Director of Student Aid at Middle Tennessee State University, President; James A. Scholes, Assistant Director of Financial Aid at Vanderbilt University, Vice President; Sylvia Holloway, Executive Secretary for the Tennessee Educational Loan Corporation, Secretary; and Eunice Edwards, Director of Financial Aids at Fisk University, Treasurer. Before adjournment, it was voted that a resolution be drawn up and forwarded to Tennessee Congressmen urging the continuation of the policy of the federal contribution of ninety percent of the funds used in the College Work-Study Program. Corporation by-laws were to be prepared and presented at the October meeting to be held in Nashville. |
